Manouchehr Momeni Shahraki, the developer of the diagnostic kit, said that the Campylobacter diagnosis kit produced domestically is very affordable compared with its foreign counterparts.

Speaking to ANA on the sidelines of the Islamic Azad University’s Asreh Omid Event which was held in late May in Tehran’s Grand Mosalla, Momeni Shahraki said conducting research on producing diagnostic kits for Campylobacter is one of the areas of activity. We are also capable of producing diagnostic kits for other types of bacteria.

Foreign-made kits are very expensive and are not affordable, or they are no longer imported due to sanctions, he noted.

So, we decided to make the Iranian product with one-tenth of the price of foreign samples, he said, adding that the Iranian product is able to diagnose 96 samples which are about twice of foreign products samples.

The other advantage of the kit is that the diagnosis time has been reduced to 6 hours, Momeni Shahraki added.

Campylobacter is a bacterial species that represent one of the most common causes of diarrheal illness.  Campylobacter is mainly spiral-shaped, S-shaped, or curved, rod-shaped bacteria.

Campylobacteriosis is a zoonosis, a disease transmitted to humans from animals or animal products.

Campylobacter jejuni infection is one of the most commonly identified bacterial causes of acute gastroenteritis.

Poultry and birds are natural sources of Campylobacter jejuni and between 30 and 100 percent of chickens carry this bacterium in the form of flora in their digestive system.

Studies show that 95 percent of human campylobacteriosis cases are caused by Campylobacter jejuni, 4 percent by Campylobacter coli, and 1 percent by other species are created.

Global statistics show that 20-35 percent of diarrheas are caused by these bacteria. Septic arthritis and bacteremia are rare infections caused by Campylobacter, Momeni Shahraki highlighted.

He went on to say that Campylobacteriosis is very important in people who use half-cooked or raw poultry meat.

The disease is more common in people with immune deficiency or very young or old people due to their weak immune systems.

The increasing trend of the bacterium in Iran causes serious risks in children, the elderly, and people with immune system defects.

A total of 227 knowledge-based firms are supplying medical equipment for health centers across the country, according to the Vice Presidency for Science and Technology.

Iranian companies producing medical equipment export their products to 54 countries across the world.
