Official: Iran Meets 85% of Ship Industry Needs Domestically
“Today, over 85% of the Iranian ship industry’s needs have been domestically met which means saving at least 350 million dollars, and the development of the rail fleet requires investment, expertise and strengthening of domestic manufacturers,” said Mohebbi.
“Iran has 8,000 kilometers of water and land borders with 14 countries, 40% of which are water, river and sea borders, and this shows the importance of the sea in different dimensions,” he added.
“For the first time in the country's history, 12 ships are being built by the IRISL, four of which in Amirabad region,” Mohebbi said, adding that the presence of foreigners in Iran’s shipping industry has reached zero since 3 years ago.
A maritime industry official announced in April that three Iranian leading shipbuilders have formed a consortium for building all-Iranian ships.
Manouchehr Alipour, the managing director of Iran’s SADRA Marine Industrial Company, said that three companies – namely SADRA, Iran Shipbuilding and Offshore Industries Complex, and Darya-Bandar – paired up to meet the country’s marine industries needs.
He believed that the consortium could mobilize potential to carry out big measures.
The official said that the SADRA Company has signed contracts for building four 3,500- or 5,000-ton ships with the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL), two of which are Ro-Ro ships and two others are for regular purposes.
He added that the construction of two ships will be finished by the end of the current calendar year to March 2025.
