Iraq’s Halafaya Gas Field to Start Trial Operations within 3 Months

Adul Ghani told the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "Gas is considered an energy source that can be relied upon in the future," explaining that "the ministry has taken significant steps in the issue of gas investment to reduce its burning from various oil fields."

He added that many projects have been signed and activated, including the Basra project (NGL), which is (NGL1) and (NGL2) being implemented by the Basra Gas Company in partnership between Shell and South Gas Company," noting "the signing of a contract with Total, which is one of the major contracts for the ministry in gas investment with a capacity of 600 million cubic feet in addition to using solar energy to generate electricity and using seawater for reservoir injection purposes, which will provide five million barrels of river water for agricultural purposes and is considered an environmentally friendly project par excellence.

He emphasized that there are gas investment projects in the Halafaya field in Maysan with a capacity of 300 million cubic feet, which has reached the final stages of trial operation, noting, "This project will be operational within two or three months, directing gas to the national network to operate power stations."

"There is another project in Nasiriyah with a capacity of 200 million cubic feet of gas, being implemented by an American company, Baker Hughes," clarifying that "this project has reached an achievement rate of 65 percent and will be operational in the third quarter of this year with a partial capacity exceeding 60 million cubic feet, where gas from the Nasiriyah and Gharraf fields will be invested."

"We have the Karbala Refinery project with a capacity of 140,000 barrels per day, which is considered one of the modern and environmentally friendly refineries par excellence," minister Adul Ghani said.

"The completion and operation of the fourth unit in the southern refineries in addition to the northern refineries (Baiji) with a capacity of 150,000 barrels per day," noting that "these refineries were destroyed during the battles with ISIS, but with the efforts of the brave men in the Northern Refineries Company, they have been restarted," he furthur said.
