Iran Stands among 3 Top States Active in ‘World Space Week’
Iran has ranked 3rd among the most active countries in the world (85 states) this week by holding 128 events in the World Space Week which is held every year on October 4-10 across the world; Iran has joined the global event since 2001.
The slogan for this year's World Space Week was ‘Space and Sustainable Development’ which was organized by Iran Space Organization and in cooperation with Iran Space Research Institute, Aerospace Research Institute and other scientific centers by holding 128 events for different groups including children, school students, university students, experts and other people.
Out of a total of 128 events held during the World Space Week, 14 events were held for children, 41 events for school students, 26 events for university students and experts in the space field, and 47 events for the general public.
Also, 94 events related to the application of space technology and 30 events related to astronomy and space exploration were held and calls for 4 competitions were declared.
Iran’s Space Organization has announced that over 37 hours of specialized programs on the topic of familiarization with the use of satellite data in various areas (presented by professors and experts in the field of remote sensing) was presented this week as well as ideas by companies active in the space field was broadcasted live (more than 10 hours) or produced (more than 27 hours) through the website of the Space Organization, Aparat website and Internet TV (IVO Jahanbin Network).
Iran is among the 10 countries with knowledge of space technology and is the 11th country in the world in terms of space science and the leading country in the region.
Iran’s global ranking in space technology has improved from 95 in 1996 to 11 in 2017.
Iran launched its first satellite, called Omid (literally meaning hope), in 2009. Rasad (literally meaning observation) satellite was also sent into orbit in 2011.
In 2012, Iran successfully put its third domestically manufactured satellite, named Navid (literally meaning promise), into orbit.
The first and most advanced homegrown remote-sensing satellite is Pars-1, which has been designed and constructed by the researchers of the Iranian Space Research Center.
Pars-1 is supposed to take pictures of all parts of the country using a high-resolution 15-meter-camera and send its photos from a 500-kilometer distance to the earth stations using a high-powered telecommunication transceiver.
According to previous reports, the Iranian Space Agency has plans to launch a number of satellites including Pars-1, Pars-2, Zafar-2, and Nahid-2.
