The department, in its list detailing the cabinet decision taken at a meeting, said the generation of solar electricity using floating power plants is an appropriate remedy for countries with limited land area.

A higher potential is available to implement solar power generation projects on the surface of reservoirs under the Ceylon Electricity Board and Sri Lanka Mahaweli Authority, the department said, noting that it has been recognized that a floating solar power voltage plant can be constructed within approximately 100 hectares of the Samanalawewa reservoir.
