Photovoltaic Panels Help Iranian Researchers to Generate Electricity with Renewable Solar Resources

TEHRAN (ANA)- A research by one of the faculty members of chemical engineering department of Islamic Azad University’s Kermanshah branch and an essay by a group of researchers about generating electricity via renewable solar energy were indexed in the prestigious scientific journal of 'Energy' with Q1 rank.

The research is based on studies on renewable solar energy sources for electricity generation by application of photovoltaic panels.

In this research, increasing the electricity production in photovoltaic panels has been investigated by their effective cooling with the help of phase change materials. A new biological phase change material (PCM) composed of oleic acid and beeswax was synthesized to adsorb excess heat from the photovoltaic panel.

“Chicken net was used as metal matrix sheets to increase the heat emission in PCM and increase the thermal and electrical efficiency of the photovoltaic panel. Considering the fact that solar energy is a free and available renewable energy source, the results of this research can be used to produce electricity for domestic, industrial and academic purposes,” Azimi, a faculty member of the chemical engineering department of Islamic Azad University’s Kermanshah branch, told ANA.

“In this research, a series of biological phase change materials were utilized without the use of chemicals. Biological phase change materials are used for cooling photovoltaic panels because the surface of photovoltaic panels become hot after working for a while under the sunlight and this causes a drop in performance and a reduction in electricity production,” he said.

Azimi said that the phase change materials are made of oleic acid and beeswax, which are bio-based and completely natural and do not harm the environment.

“Photovoltaic solar panels are used everywhere in the world for domestic and industrial, urban units etc. as well as universities which can generate electricity for free, and a large amount of electricity can be produced from sunlight with the help of these panels,” he added “Of course, it is the first time that using biological phase change material in the absence of chemicals has been proposed and explained in this essay, and it is highly important to protect the environment,” Azimi said.

Photovoltaic (PV) panels are used to produce electricity directly from sunlight. PV panels consist of a number of individual cells connected together to produce electricity of a desired voltage.

Photovoltaic panels are inherently DC devices. To produce AC, they must be used together with an inverter.
