Iranian Knowledge-Based Firm Produces Eye Drops from Umbilical Cord Blood to Heal Burning, Dry Eyes
“Last year, we succeeded in commercially producing human cord blood serum for culturing cells,” Reza Moghadasali, the managing director of the Iranian knowledge-based company told ANA.
“Human umbilical cord blood serum is prepared from birth waste and is full of growth factors and nutritious proteins for the proliferation of cells; because of its human source, it is safer than the animal sample, therefore, the production of serum for culturing cells from a human source is better than that which is from an animal source,” the researcher added.
Saying that this serum is obtained from maternity waste that is thrown away after the birth of a baby, and today this product is used in the world to produce various medicinal products for restoration and rejuvenation, including in the production of eye drops and skincare creams, he added they have produced eye drops from it, which are now in the clinical trial phase.
Moghadasali, who is a member of Tehran-based Royan Research Institute, added, “The eye drop is produced from umbilical cord blood serum, which contains growth factors, so it can be useful in healing eye injuries.”
“During our research, we found out that the product can be used in healing chemical burns, cornea transplants, curing dry eyes, etc. This drop can help in repairing the cornea layers," he highlighted.
The director of the knowledge-based company went on to say that the product has a foreign counterpart, but it has not yet been imported into the country.
“The relevant tests that have already been done and have showed good results so far. These tests are planned to continue,” the researcher continued.
“We were the first company to commercially produce and commercialize umbilical cord blood serum, which can have other applications apart from being used for research purposes,” Moghadasali underscored.
He went on to say that they intend to produce the product under certain circumstances so that it can be used for medical purposes as well, adding the product can lead them towards producing other products.
