Iranian Knowledge-Based Company Produces Medicine from Peppermint to Treat IBS
Mahdi Kashir, the managing director of the Iranian knowledge-based company, in an interview with an Iranian media outlet, said that they have produced a type of pills (capsules) named Kolmigan which is derived from the peppermint oil to treat patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
“This drug contains peppermint oil and reduces the IBS symptoms, including intestinal spasms. It is very effective if it properly and unchanged reaches to the intestine,” he added.
“Due to its irritating nature, peppermint oil is prohibited for use by people with reflux disease (GERD) or stomach ulcers,” Kashir noted, while stressing that the herbal capsules are really effective in treating IBS if it passes through the stomach and reach the intestine.
“it is highly effective if it reaches the site of infection and helps to improve the problems caused by this syndrome,” he continued.
Meanwhile, the managing director of the knowledge-based company said that medicines such as Calcium channel blockers are also prescribed by doctors to treat patients with the IBS.
He offered the Kolmigan instead to treat the syndrome, while noting that there is no specific and definitive medicine for it and the doctors usually tell the patients to change their diet and lifestyle.
The researcher referred to the low price of the Iranian-made drug as compared to the foreign equivalents as one of its advantage, saying the domestically-made product is half the price of the foreign-made imported products.
Kashir said that the herbal medicine production has created jobs for six people directly and 10 people indirectly, adding that the Iranian Vice-Presidency for Science and Technology has helped them in turning their ideas into the medical product.
