Iranian Experts Make Advisor System for Smart Electric Bicycle

TEHRAN (ANA)- Technologists of University of Tehran succeeded in designing and building a smart e-bike advisor system that intelligently manages the user's energy consumption in electric and stationary bikes.

“An advisor system has been added to the electric bike which can guide the user how much pedaling intensity is better to divide the energy by collecting data from various sensors,” said Hamed Kebriayee, a faculty member of Electrical and Computer Department of the University of Tehran.

“We have made it operational with sensors whose data is collected online with the help of an intelligent algorithm while the bicycle is moving,” he added.

Noting that the system measures a set of sensor data, including environmental parameters like temperature and humidity, road slope, battery charge percentage and the condition of the cyclist, like blood oxygen level and heart rate, Kebriayee said that the information is collected in a board and then transferred to the processor board through wi-fi.”

“The advisor system recommends an optimal program suitable for each person for daily use based on the data analyzer installed on the bicycle and the doctor's or sports coach's program,” he explained.

In another development, a group of Iranian engineers at Shahroud University of Technology produced six models of electric bicycles which can also be used in the hybrid form in addition to the possibility of using pedals and engine.

“Our research at Dynamotor Center located at Shahroud’s Science and Technology Park is focused on electric engines. Our produced bicycle is equipped with a ‘middle drive’ type engine that enjoys good stability and a long lifespan,” said Seyed Vahid Hosseini, a faculty member of Shahroud University of Technology.

He underlined that in this project, the Iranian researchers succeeded in indigenization of the bike’s battery, noting that the electric bicycle rides in three modes of ‘ordinary bicycle with pedals’, ‘engine-based movement without pedaling’ and ‘hybrid-based movement’.

“While riding a bicycle, a sensor measures the torque of the driver's leg and finds out whether the person intends to move or not, and in case of movement, the engine comes to the rider's aid,” Hosseini said.

He added that this feature helps the rider and facilitates movement for the cyclist in the peaks of movement, including riding on a steep slope.

Noting that the speed of the bicycle is about 30 to 35 kilometers per hour, Hosseini said, “The bicycle has also reached a speed of 45 kilometers per hour.”
