Iranian Academics Take Important Steps towards Inventing Products Recharged with Body Movements

TEHRAN (ANA)- Iranian researchers at Amirkabir University of Technology investigated the possibility of producing electric current from periodic tensile and buckling loading in piezoelectric PVDF which leads to making products rechargeable with the movements of human body.

“Electric current is generated from piezoelectric materials due to pressure or impact on materials with piezoelectric properties,” said Behrang Adeli, a student at Amirkabir University of Technology and the project manager.

He added that the purpose of this project was to investigate the possibility of generating electric current through stretching and buckling resulted from stretching a piezoelectric material.

“By creating suitable conditions and finally producing a polymer mixed layer of two different types of polymers PVDF (Polyvinylidene Fluoride) and PU (Polyurethane), it is possible to reach an optimal layer to check the possibility of producing electric current from that layer,” Adeli said.

Noting that one of these two polymers created flow due to pressure, and the other had the ability to stretch and have an elastic state up to several times the initial length, he said that by combining the two and finding the right limits for the combination, it was expected to bring about a fundamental change in the use of piezoelectrics.

“It is possible to make battery chargers that can be connected to the human body in sports clothes, which can charge a mobile battery as a result of stretching movements of the arms and legs during movement or exercise,” Adeli said.

In a relevant development, a knowledge-based company in Iran managed to manufacture a body analyzer machine which has been presented to the market at one tenth of the price of its foreign model.

“Our knowledge-based company operates under the brand ‘Anya’ and it has presented a body composition analysis device used in nutrition clinics, sports clubs and fitness clinics,” Amir Imani, the head of the Board of Directors of Sarang Industrial Solutions company, said.

He added that the device analyses the body in terms of fat, muscle, protein, intracellular and extracellular water, visceral fat, basic metabolism and some other parameters, which shows information both in the whole body and separately.

“The body composition analysis device is equipped with 8 electrodes; 4 electrodes are placed on the soles of the feet and 4 electrodes are placed on the palms of the hands when the person holds the handles, and it enjoys multi-frequency so that different frequencies are applied to the body from 1 to 200 kHz and the measurement is performed,” Imani said.

The body composition analyzer machine takes the physical examination to a new level. In traditional physical examinations, weight and height are used as the criteria for judging health, and weight is divided by the square of height to obtain the "BMI", which is used to describe the health of the person.
