Iranian Expatriate Researcher Wins Abu Reyhan Birouni Award

TEHRAN (ANA)- Mahya Mehrmohammadi, a member of the program for cooperation with Iranian experts and technologists abroad (Connect), was selected as the top young researcher in the field of biology in the current Persian calendar year (started on March 21), winning the Abu Reyhan Birouni Award.

At the 11th Abu Reyhan Birouni Award ceremony and which honors the outstanding young Iranian researchers, Mehrmohammadi, a graduate of Cornell and Yale Universities and a researcher at Stanford University, was honored as the top researcher in the field of biology.

The young scientist’s research field is in the field of molecular diagnosis of diseases through blood biomarkers. The technology developed by her is based on sequencing free DNA fragments in blood, and the data obtained from it is analyzed using mathematical models and machine learning to identify diseases such as lung cancer in the early stages.

In addition to early cancer detection, the technology is also used in other fields like organ transplantation, autoimmune diseases, inflammation, and prenatal diagnosis.

In a relevant development in July, four Iranian students clinched three gold medals and a silver medal at the 36th International Biology Olympiad (IBO 2025), ranking second among 81 countries, up from third in 2024.

Siavash Pezeshpour, Ali Soleimanzadeh Kalahroudi, and Ali-Akbar Nourollahi won the gold medals, while Radin Bayani secured the silver medal at the competition which was held from July 19 to 27 in Quezon City, Philippines.

IBO is the world’s premier biology competition for secondary school students. This year, the competition brought together 81 delegations from 81 countries and territories (including 3 observer delegations), and a total of 298 contestants, who competed in a series of theoretical and practical examinations in the field of biology.
