Int’l Student in Southern Iran Registers New Species of “Nematodes”

TEHRAN (ANA)- A new species of “nematodes” has been globally registered by an international student at Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz in the Southern part of Iran, a report said.

Ahmad Malek Jomeh, an Iraqi international student at Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz, under the supervision of Dr. Sedigheh Azimi, Associate Professor in the Plant Pathology Department of the Faculty of Agriculture at the mentioned university, succeeded in discovering a new species of “nematodes” and registering it worldwide.

“Plant parasitic nematodes” are a group of animals that are associated with important agricultural products and are considered one of the factors threatening food security globally, the report added.

The newly registered nematode, has been named “Criconemoides iraqicus.” The mentioned species is the first nematode species to be described from the country of Iraq.

Also ealier this week, an Iranian research team at Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz, with the support of Iran Nano and Micro Technologies Innovation Council (INIC), developed a technology for producing nanostructured high-purity needle coke by using oil waste and asphaltene as cheap and available domestic resources.

‘Developing needle coke technology from asphaltene and oil waste to manufacture graphite nanostructure electrodes’ is the title of a project being implemented under the leadership of Babak Mokhtari and his colleagues at Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz. This project is aimed at developing a local technology for producing high-quality needle coke from domestic oil resources.
