AI Helps Tehran Subway’s Safety

TEHRAN (ANA)- An Iranian company stationed at Pardis Science and Technology Park implemented a system based on artificial intelligence (AI) and data science that warns of existence of an obstacle on the rail and its boundary and activates the braking system if necessary.

“This system works in such a way that if someone intentionally or unintentionally enters the rail boundary, whether in the subway or on intercity trains, it sends the necessary warnings to the conductor. If a timely response is not made, the system activates the emergency brake based on the speed and distance of the train from the obstacle and prevents an accident,” said Alireza Mehrgou, the managing director of the company.

Noting that urban trains have so far lacked such a system and there were no cameras on Tehran subway trains, he said, “The system requires the distance, speed, and turning angle of the train to make decisions.”

"One of the important features of the product is that in addition to installing a camera in front of the train, cameras are installed inside the train cabin to monitor the behavior of the drivers," Mehrgou said.

"The designed system can identify various objects, including humans, animals, birds, or vehicles in various dimensions and determine their distance from the rail line. Even if the object in question moves out of range before the train arrives, the recorded information will play a role in the driver's intelligent and optimal decision-making,” he added.

The Tehran and Suburbs Subway Operating Company announced in May the indigenization of over 219 parts and extensive cooperation with the Iranian knowledge-based companies and academic centers to achieve self-sufficiency in this industry.

Hojjatollah Qa’ed Rahmati, the deputy director-general of the Tehran and Suburbs Subway Operating Company, described indigenization of rail transportation as a strategic step towards self-sufficiency and sustainable development, and said, “The rail transportation industry, specially the subway, as one of the vital arteries of the capital, needs indigenization of parts and equipment more than ever.”

He underlined the possibility for manufacturing another 198 parts inside the country, and said, “The Tehran and Suburbs Subway Operating Company, relying on the capabilities of the Iranian experts and close cooperation with the knowledge-based companies, has so far taken effective steps towards indigenization of parts.”
