Iranian Company Makes Nano-Based Sunscreens for Children without Chemical Absorbers

TEHRAN (ANA)- A pharmaceutical company in Iran used nanotechnology to produce a sunscreen for children with an increased SPF of about 39 and without chemical absorbers.

The company has presented a specialized nano-based product to protect children's skin which is free of chemical absorbers and uses titanium dioxide nanoparticles as a physical UV absorber.

While common chemical absorbers in sunscreens may cause skin irritation and allergies, the use of nanoparticles, while increasing the SPF protection factor, also increases the apparent transparency of the protective layer on the skin.

The results of standard tests show that the SPF of this sunscreen increased from 11.39 in the control sample to 38.95 in the final sample using nanotechnology. This feature is a significant advantage for a product specifically for children, who need more protection and less irritation.

With ingredients like vitamins E and C, aloe vera gel, glycerin, and calendula extract, the sunscreen which has been produced specially for children, not only protects against UV rays, but also has anti-inflammatory and moisturizing properties. It is also resistant to sweat and washing, making it a reassuring choice for parents for everyday use on hot and sunny summer days, specially outdoors.

In a relevant development in 2024, an Iranian technological firm had also produced sunscreen from Zinc oxide nanoparticles coated with zinc aluminate, which exhibits a protective effect immediately upon application.

“One of the raw materials needed for the production of sunscreens is zinc oxide nanoparticles, imports of which faced hurdles in due to the sanctions. Subsequently, the producers faced limits and the prices of the imported raw materials increased,” said Nafiseh Nikpay, the representative of the technological company in reference to the production of high-tech raw materials needed for the production of cosmetics and health products in their technological company.

“It was then that the researchers at this company stepped in the direction of the production of high-tech raw materials and a company was established to produce and supply these raw materials. Currently, we use nano compounds to produce sunscreens. When nanoscale zinc oxide is used in producing sunscreens, it becomes more capable of reflecting Sun’s ultraviolet rays away from the skin surface. For that, we use Zinc oxide nanoparticles coated with zinc aluminate.”

Saying that the use of these nanoparticles prevents sunlight from reaching the skin tissues, Nikpap continued, “Nano sunscreens exhibits a protective effect immediately upon application. Meaning that these creams immediately after application, they form a protective layer on the skin surface and create a defense barrier against the Sun's ultraviolet rays.”

“The nanoparticles used in this product do not enter the cell and remain on the surface of the dead skin cells,” the researcher further highlighted.
