Iranian Knowledge-Based Company Indigenizes Software for Cancer Detection

TEHRAN (ANA)- Iranian researchers at a knowledge-based company stationed at the Islamic Azad University’s Najafabad branch developed an automated software based on artificial intelligence.

“In this software, a dense multi-channel deep neural network with different power sources and redundant block connections has been designed to perform the main task of diagnosis,” Shervan Fekri Ershad, the head of the Board of Directors of the company, told ANA.

He explained that the process is in a way that the software receives the CT scan or MRI image from the patient and transfers it to the designed deep network, adding that the network has been trained on a large number of CT scan and MRI images of people who have definitely had cancer, as well as people who have been confirmed not to have cancer.

“By extracting features from the images, the network detects whether or not a person has cancer in a short time and notifies the user,” Fekri Ershad said.

“Also, in cases like lung cancer, the software can diagnose whether the cancer is benign or malignant. Currently, two types of lung cancer and skin cancer are included in the user version of the software. Diagnosis of cervical cancer and breast cancer has also gone through the laboratory stages and will be available soon,” he underlined.

In a relevant development in December, Iranian researchers at a knowledge-based company produced a new and cost-effective nanomedicine for treating cancer patients.

“This drug plays an important role as an anti-tumor drug in the treatment of certain types of cancer and is used in the treatment of metastatic breast cancer, specially for the patients who have heart problems,” said Ahmad Pourahadi, the managing director of the company.

“The drug’s name is Sina Doxosome and it is also effective in the treatment of advanced ovarian cancer and acts as an important treatment option in reducing the growth and spread of cancer cells,” he added.

Noting that the drug is also applied as an effective solution in the treatment of Kaposi's sarcoma in patients with AIDS, Pourahadi said, “This product contains a drug that can selectively destroy cancer cells. The doxorubicin hydrochloride contained in this drug is surrounded by small liposomal spherical shells.”

“The concentration process in this drug allows the drug to be more effectively directed through the bloodstream to cancerous tissues,” he underlined.
