Producing "Activated Carbon" from Walnut Shell, Agricultural Waste
Maryam Farahani, the professor at the Islamic Azad University Roudehen Branch, told ANA correspondent on the sidelines of the Asreh Omid Event, that the activated carbon is widely used in industries such as oil and petrochemical, food industry, waste water treatment plants, air treatment and pharmaceutical companies etc.
The researcher said that she and her teammates produced the activated carbon at the Rahpouyan biological research center located at Roudehen Azad Univeristy.
She considered the Asreh Omid Event to be a suitable ground for strengthening the link between the university and the industry, which will lead to the production, development and introduction of new products or new technologies in the production of strategic and widely used products in various industries in the country.
Farahani further praised the Islamic Azad University’s Asreh Omid Event for laying the ground for the growth and cultivation of new ideas among academicians and researchers in response to the challenges in the country's technological field.
According to studies available on the internet, activated carbon was produced form walnut shell and groundnut shell by two major stages which are pyrolysis (carbonization) and activation using 1m H2SO4.It was found that the adsorption activity of activated charcoal increased with the combustion loss of the carbonization products. 80% and 92% yield of the activated carbon was gotten from groundnut shell and walnut shell respectively
The national Asreh Omid Event was held in late May in Tehran’s Grand Mosalla with the participation of 3,000 knowledge-based companies, laboratories, research teams and startups.
