Iranian Specialists Develop Platform Based on Ultrasound to Treat Alzheimer’s
“We have developed a platform consisting of two parts, and a part of this platform was developed by using focused ultrasound technologies and the other part was developed by using drug loading on nanobubbles,” said Mohammad Javad Karimzadeh, the managing director of the technological company.
“In this method, drugs to treat Alzheimer's disease are loaded onto nanobubbles by using a technology that we patented, and after injecting it into the body by using focused ultrasound technology, the drug moves directly to the target organ, namely the brain,” he added.
“The focused ultrasound waves of this platform cause the blood-brain barrier layer, which prevents the drug from passing to the brain, to open temporarily and reversibly, and with this function, the drug moves more easily to the target organ,” Karimzadeh said.
"The main feature of this therapeutic technology is that it greatly increases the effectiveness of the drug because the drug is directed to the affected part of the brain that is impaired by Alzheimer's disease,” he noted, adding that this method will prevent the drug from being distributed throughout the body.
In a relevant development in November, Iranian researchers at a knowledge-based company had also succeeded in production of medicinal supplements to prevent the occurrence of Alzheimer's and treat the disease.
“The products that we have made in the nanotechnology field are drugs for prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's disease, and this complementary drug is produced in the form of candy and chewing gum,” said Maria Beyhaqqi, the managing-director of the knowledge-based company stationed at Mashhad’s Salamat Park.
Noting that the two effective ingredients of this drug, namely fencol and quercetin were formulated in nano sizes, she said, “This formulation was used to produce medicine in the form of chewing gum and candy, but since these drugs are mostly prescribed for the elderly, we offered this formulation in the form of syrup, which has therapeutic properties.”
“This drug is based on the expression of a series of genes that lead to the occurrence of Alzheimer's disease, and the nanoparticles used in this medicinal supplement reduce the expression of genes or prevent their expression,” Beyhaqqi said.
