Iranian Scientists Produce Smart Materials to Monitor Condition of Bridges, Detect Methane
“Our products are smart materials or paints, which are in four basic categories and include thermochroma, (react to temperature), photochroma (react to light), chemichroma (sensitive to chemicals) and the other category is piezokerma which are sensitive to pressure and mechanical shocks,” said Mohammad Kazzemi, the managing director of the knowledge-based company.
“These materials are smart because their color is reversible or irreversible in a way that their color change in contact with other materials is permanent or temporary (returning to the original color),” he added.
Noting that the materials can also be used in mines, Kazzemi said, “Using these smart materials, the tags change color as soon as the methane gas is released and people can leave the mine.”
Coal mine methane (CMM) refers to methane released from the coal and surrounding rock strata due to mining activities.
In underground mines, CMM can create an explosion hazard for miners so it is removed by ventilation systems.
