Iranian Researcher Studies Development of Technical Know-How to Make ZSM5 Catalyst

TEHRAN (ANA)- Ali Nakha’ipour, a professor at Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, conducted a research project titled ‘technical development of HZSM5 zeolite catalyst with different structures without using a molder and using commercial raw materials’ which was also supported by the National Science Foundation of Iran.

“HZSM5 zeolite is one of the most key catalysts used in petrochemical and refining processes. Although the structure of the catalyst is different for each of these processes, the key point is the possibility of making a catalyst with different ratios of silica to alumina, which changes the acidity of the catalyst used in these processes,” said Nakha’ipour.

“HZSM5 zeolite catalyst is one of the most key catalysts used in petrochemical and refining processes, which are used in the processes of converting methanol to propylene, cracking petroleum residues, and hydrocracking,” he added.

“It is clear that the consumption of this catalyst in the country's FCC and RFCC processes is very high, and the development of its technical know-how for the commercialization of these processes is very much needed by the Iranian industries,” Nakha’ipour underlined.

Zeolite ZSM5 is used to convert alcohols directly into gasoline.

ZSM5 has been used as a support material for catalysis. In one such example, copper is deposited on the zeolite and a stream of ethanol is passed through at temperatures of 240 to 320 °C as a vapour stream, which causes the ethanol to oxidize to acetaldehyde; two hydrogens are lost by the ethanol as hydrogen gas.
