Iranian Knowledge-Based Firm Produces Advanced Fire Suppression System

TEHRAN (ANA)- A knowledge-based company in Pardis Technology Park in Tehran has introduced an advanced fire suppression system that can extinguish fires in oil tanks, refineries, and oil wells with the least amount of water within an hour.

Mahmoud Dehghani, the managing director of the knowledge-based company said in an interview with local Iranian media that water mist fire suppression system is a new product of their company. He said that the fire extinguishing systems are one of the items, imports of which into the country is difficult because it is under the foreign oppressive sanctions.

He added that the system is for putting out fire in oil, gas and petrochemical fields as well as for bringing fire under control in storage tanks or oil wells.

"In the early moments when a fire occurs in oil wells or in refineries, with this system, the temperature of the fire can be lowered from 1300°C to 350°C, which literally means that the fire does not cause any damage to other facilities. Moreover, the lowered temperature makes fire control and extinguishing operations easier and allows the firefighting teams to approach the site of the fire," Dehghani said.

"The main advantage of the system is the significant reduction in the amount of water used to put out the fire," he sadi, adding that their system with a 1,000 liters of water can put out a fire in one hour while the previous methods consume 2,000 liters of water to extinguish fire in an oil well within 4 to 5 hours.

The managing director of the company further said that reducing water consumption in the system is because of high energy absorption.

"In conventional methods of fire extinguishing, cooling is done by heating water, but in this system, cooling is done by cooling water. The difference in energy absorption in these two modes is a thousand times, so our system can absorb more energy from fire," he added.

"This system uses water mist for extinguishing. Using water mist causes the fire to suffocate because it depletes the oxygen of the fire place," he continued.

"In the previous systems, to extinguish the fire directly, the core of the fire must have been targeted. Therefore, to extinguish refinery fires, the firefighting teams would try to keep the surrounding tanks cool so that the fuel in the tank burns and runs out. Fire extinguishing in this method would take 24 to 48 hours," Dehghani added, "But in this system, we directly target the tank that is on fire, and since this system keeps the surrounding environment cool, the main cause of fire is eliminated. This is the same method of extinguishing the fire with foam."

"This advantage has made it possible to control the fire in less time and with less energy," the managing director of the knowledge-based company concluded.
