Iran, Pakistan Mulling Expansion of Military Cooperation

TEHRAN (ANA)- Senior Iranian and Pakistani military officials underlined their firm will to strengthen military ties between the two friendly nations.

In a meeting in Tehran between Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Bagheri and Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar, the commander of Pakistani Air Force, the two senior military officials underscored expansion of military cooperation between the two country.

Major General Baqheri said following removal of UN-imposed arms embargo on Iran, the country has no limit for promotion of military cooperation with Pakistan anymore.

The general noted that Iran regards Pakistan’s security as its own and will spare no effort to help the promotion of security in Pakistan.

The Pakistani air force commander, for his part, expressed his country’s readiness to hold joint drills with Iran.

Late in June, Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Ashtiani called for booting defense cooperation between Tehran and Islamabad to establish security in West Asia.

General Ashtiani made the remarks in a meeting with visiting Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee of Pakistan General Nadeem Raza in Tehran.

“We are still far from the desired situation (in the region),” he said.

“But there is no doubt that cooperation between Iran and Pakistan in various defense domains in such tense conditions can be an effective contribution to improving the security situation in the West Asian region.”

General Ashtiani also warned of attempts made by “meddlesome countries” to influence Tehran-Islamabad ties, saying Tehran attaches great importance to the deepening of relations with neighboring and regional countries.

Raza, said for his part, that Pakistan is looking for more areas where the two Islamic republic's can cooperate.

He underscored the need to boost all-out bilateral ties.
