Iranian Infants to Receive Rotavirus Vaccine
The oral rotavirus vaccine is prescribed for infants to prevent diarrhea caused by the virus.
The Iranian Health Ministry announced that it will start the plan by Hormozgan and Bushehr Universities of Medical Sciences for 2-month-old infants.
Arshi, the head of the infectious disease management center of the Health Ministry, had previously announced that rotavirus vaccine is prescribed at the ages of 2, 4, and 6 months, and rotavirus vaccination will prevent at least 10,000 cases of severe diarrhea and the need for hospitalization annually.
Rotavirus commonly causes severe, watery diarrhea and vomiting in infants and young children. Children may become dehydrated and need to be hospitalized and can even die.
Most children (about 9 out of 10) who get the vaccine will be protected from severe rotavirus disease. About 7 out of 10 children will be protected from rotavirus disease of any severity.
