Iran, China Launch Joint Research Center to Study Climatic, Ecological Conditions in Gorgan

TEHRAN (ANA)- The caretaker head of the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research (ITP) has said that the Chinese institute has established a research center in the Northern Iranian city of Gorgan to study and understand the processes and impacts of climate, ecology, environmental changes and civilization evolution in the West Asian region.

The caretaker head of the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research (ITP) which is a Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) or ITCAS, Professor Xuliang Zhuang made the remarks in his address to the 3rd International Conference on Quaternary Sciences. The conference was held at the venue of the Geological Survey and Mineral Exploration of Iran in Tehran on January 29.

Stating that during the last two decades, the Chinese institute has made significant achievements and progress, he added. "We have established long-term cooperation with our Iranian partners, so that in 2019, the ITCAS West Asia Center was founded in Gorgan [in the Northern part of Iran]."

 “The Gorgan-based ITCAS West Asia Center was launched to lay the ground for promoting international cooperation and interdisciplinary studies to understand the processes and impacts of climate, ecology, environmental changes and civilization evolution in the West Asian region,” he added.

He further pointed to the interaction between man and the environment as one of the major problems in Quaternary studies, adding, “Meanwhile, Iran, located at the crossroad of East and West, is the home of an ancient and deep-rooted civilization that entails the cultural elements of various ethnic groups. It has made significant achievements that has affected many countries and regions across Eurasia, making it an indispensable member.”
