Iran-Made Twin Hybrid Fuel-Electric Turbofan Engine New Way to Increase Efficiency

TEHRAN (ANA)- A young Iranian inventor and a graduate of civil engineering at Islamic Azad University’s Shahroud branch manufactured a ‘twin hybrid fuel-electric turbofan engine’ which boosts efficiency in turbine engines.

“The aim of production of this engine was to increase the efficiency of turbine engines in different conditions, store energy in the form of electricity, and store hydrogen,” Massoud Arab Ameri told ANA.

“Given the shortage of fossil fuels and the pollution that they make, a method for using different fuels, specially hydrogen, and optimizing them has been presented in this invention,” he added.

Arab Ameri said that the engine enjoys many advantages over other types of jet engines in production of "thrust" power, adding that the engine vibration and the time to reach the maximum propulsion power have reached their lowest degree.

He added that given the application of different fuels in this engine, including hydrogen, production of minimum emissions has highly decreased compared to the output power.

Noting that "turbofan jet engine" was introduced after application of ‘turbojet’, the inventor said, “This jet engine can be used in the aviation industry, super sports cars, speedboats and flying robots.”

“Also, by changing the dimensions of the power generator, it can be used as a small-sized, high-efficiency, semi-industrial, and industrial generator,” he explained.

A turbofan engine, sometimes referred to as a fanjet or bypass engine, is a jet engine variant which produces thrust using a combination of jet core efflux and bypass air which has been accelerated by a ducted fan that is driven by the jet core. The ratio of the mass of air bypassing the engine core versus the mass of the air going through the core is referred to as a the bypass ratio.

A turbofan engine that derives most of its thrust from the jet engine core efflux is referred to as low bypass engine whereas an engine that derives most of its thrust from the fan is referred to as a high bypass engine.
