Iranian Company Produces Robotic Arms to Assist People with Neurological Disorders

TEHRAN (ANA)- Iranian researchers have designed and developed a robotic arm to contribute to treatment process of neurological disorders along with rTMS machines.

“The robotic arm is a supplementary to the rTMS machine, or machine that generates a magnetic field in the brain. After the doctor's diagnosis, the rTMS device creates a magnetic field that stimulates neurons or nerves in specific points of the brain and accelerates the treatment process of depression, addiction and severe anxiety,” Reza Karkon, Technical Manager of a knowledge-based Iranian medical equipment manufacturer said in interview with ANA.

In repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), an electromagnetic coil placed against the scalp creates a magnetic field that stimulates certain areas of the brain. During an rTMS session for depression, an electromagnetic coil is placed against the scalp of your head with repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS).

“The intelligent robotic arm is used along with the rTMS machine to create a magnetic field and stimulate the neurons,” he added.

“This smart robotic device is not only used for mental illnesses, but also for any medical conditions involving the human nervous system,” the researcher said.

The technical director of the medical equipment company went on to say that back pain, knee pain, spinal cord disorder” are some other medical conditions that can be treated with the robotic arms that contribute to the process of stimulating brain neurons.

Further talking about the material used in producing the device and its features, he said that the material of the robot is magnet and it is connected to the patient's head without direct contact with the scalp like a magnet and ultimately creates a magnetic field.

“By creating a magnetic field and stimulating the brain nerves, the robotic arm forces the neurons at a certain area in the brain to behave in a new way, and this change in the reaction of the neurons makes the patient to go through the treatment process,” Karkon further explained.

Stating that the smart robotic arm has similar foreign equivalents, the researcher clarified, "So far, this device has been manufactured in other countries like the United States, China, and the Netherlands.”
