“This device was produced in this research institute and with a memorandum of understanding signed with Tehran University of Medical Sciences, and it has now entered the clinical phase,” the NSTRI chairman Dr. Kashian said.

He noted that major companies producing blood irradiation systems are mainly located in Canada and Germany, but due to The US-led sanctions, the imports of those devices faced challenges in Iran a few years ago.

“Usually, any equipment or drug that is produced in the country and is supposed to be used in medical field, would necessarily go under pre-clinical or biological assessments, that is why, the device we designed also needed biological evaluations and after that the clinical evaluations will be followed,” the NSTRI head added.

“In clinical evaluations, the blood products irradiated by this device are injected into the patient's body and the patient is examined to see if the desired impacts have been achieved in the patient. Moreover, there has to be confidence that there has been no problem for the patient,” he continued.

“Accordingly, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between the NSTRI and the Oncology, Cell Therapy and Hematology Institute of Tehran University of Medical Sciences in order to implement the clinical phase of the device. According to this MoU, irradiated blood will be injected into patients for one year with their permission,” Kashian said.

According to the researcher, after proving the effectiveness of the device in the clinical phase, their mass production will begin and they will be offered to the Iranian Blood Transfusion Organization and relevant hospitals.
