Iran Exports 60,000 Tons of Chickpeas to Neighboring Countries
“During the first eight months of this year of 1402 in the Iranian calendar (March 21-Nov. 21, 2023), about 60,000 tons of chickpeas were exported and 20,000 tons were imported into the country,” the chairman of the board of directors of IRPLA Davoud Lapechi said.
Lapechi said that there is the 150-year old tradition of processing black chickpeas into split peas in Iran and added, "The conversion of black chickpeas into split peas started from home factories and currently about 95% of its processing is done in East Azerbaijan Province and Azarshahr city.”
“There are more than 150 factories in Azarshahr city that process split peas,” he added.
Speaking on a radio program, he said that, “Almost 60% of black chickpeas are supplied through imports and 40% through domestic cultivation. Black chickpeas are imported from countries such as India, Ethiopia, and Australia and are transformed into split peas in Azarshahr factories.”
“The only leguminous product exported from Iran is ‘official’ chickpeas, which are exported from the Western provinces like Kermanshah and Lorestan, to Iraq, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, etc.”
