Three Russian Steel, Petrochemical Companies to Use Iranian-Made Catalysts
Mir-Hooman Karimi Vathiq, the managing director of the knowledge-based Sarv Oil & Gas Company said that the only catalyst for ethylene production is the acetylene hydrogenation catalyst.
“The know-how of producing this catalyst is only available to a few foreign companies, and over 35 years ago, this variant of catalyst used to be imported by Iranian petrochemical complexes,” he said.
Karimi described the acetylene hydrogenation catalyst as a strategic product in the petrochemical industry, adding, “In this company, with the implementation of a joint project and with the research investment of Morvarid Petrochemical Company, its commercialization phase was carried out by the experts in this company, and after obtaining the desired technical and performance results, the production of this catalyst began, and last month, this valuable product was completely ready for industrial use. It was handed over to Morvarid Petrochemical Company.”
“There are two types of ‘ethylene gas’ and ‘synthesis gas’ in the petrochemical industry, and any country capable of producing ethylene and synthesis gas is considered to be possessing the entire petrochemical industry, and currently this company has been able to locally produce these two types of gases, bringing the petrochemical industry to an honorable self-sufficiency,” Karimi pointed out.
According to the director of this knowledge-based company, until a decade ago, Indian and Chinese companies used to sell these catalysts to petrochemical and steel companies at a fortune; but with the help of this company, those products are sold at a much more reasonable prices.
He added that producing this type of catalyst has helped the Iranian experts develop their know-how for furthur researches, in the meantime, the process has increased the production efficiency of important products such as urea, ammonia, methanol, and sponge iron in the country.
Karimi pointed out that the domestically production of the catalyst by Sarv company took ten years, and clarified, “Since 2015, due to the completion of a chain of steel catalysts and catalysts for the production of synthesis gas, foreign exporters were sidelined in the Iranian market; in other words, trust in the products of this knowledge-based company was increased.”
He pointed to the export of catalyst worth 20 million dollars to Russia and said, “The majority of the company's exports were to Russia. Currently, the company’s experts are setting up units in three steel and petrochemical complexes in Russia, and the world's largest petrochemical producer of urea and ammonia is also going to start operation with Iranian-made catalysts of Sarv Oil & Gas Company.”
