African Nuclear Experts Meet in Kenya to Promote Peaceful Use of Technology
The fourth African Youth Nuclear Summit brought together nuclear regulators, scholars and students from more than 20 African countries to develop strategies for cooperation on the use of nuclear technology.
In his opening remarks, James Keter Chumba, the director-general of Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority, said "Nuclear technology is ideal for diagnosis of illnesses such as cancers because it is non-intrusive and very accurate."
Radiation therapy which utilizes nuclear technology is also an option for treating complicated illnesses and nuclear science can also help farmers protect their crops from pests through the use of sterile insect techniques, he said.
Enobot Agboraw, the executive secretary of the African Commission on Nuclear Energy, said that nuclear technology is a clean source of energy that can help increase access to electricity for African countries.
