Iranian Company Produces Flame Retardants for Use in Different Industries

TEHRAN (ANA)- Researchers at one of the knowledge-based companies in Iran have not only produced bio-polymers for use in toys and food coatings, but also, they have produced flame retardant powders that make cables and construction equipment resistant in fire.

“Our company's products are PVC softeners,” Farhad Larki, director of research and development of the Iranian knowledge-based company said in an interview with Iranian media.

He added that their company has 30 years of experience in producing chemicals, including automotive and industrial antifreeze, PVC plasticizers such as TOTM, DOTP and DOS, Trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA) and powder products including flame retardant powder and special rubber improvers.

He added that some of these products are PVC-based oils that are used in the preparation of PVC granules and wire and cable industries, with plasticizers or softeners as examples, and stated, “Plasticizers are liquid substances that are mixed with hard polymers. And they make them soft and flexible to make them processable and create a variety of applications in them.”

“Plasticizers are substances injected into polymeric materials to provide or improve elasticity or plasticity required for reprocessing or use. They facilitate free-flowing material dispersion. Some of them, namely diketyl sebasate, also improve the properties of polymer materials against fire, light and heat,” he added.

The director of research and development of the company named DOTP as one of the products produced in their company, saying, “Dioctyl terephthalate (DOTP) is a very good softener with properties such as partial electrical conductivity, low volatility, resistance to heat and freezing. Since this product is not carcinogenic and toxic, it can be used in plastic data-x-items that are in direct contact with humans, such as children's toys, food protective covers, and health and medical devices.”

“Because of the product's low volatility rate from plastic, products softened with it last longer. Greater resistance to low temperatures and, as a result, less fragility of products are other advantages that this softener offers to polymer products,” Larki further pointed out.

According to him, DOTP is suitable for use in electrical cables and insulation due to its high resistance at high temperature, adding that the product is non-toxic and free of environmental hazards.

“This product is used in the cable industry, automobile industry, production of washers, hoses and PVC pipes, production of PVC films and production of food protective coatings and health and medical industries,” he added.

Referring to the production of trioctyl trimethylate (TOTM) in their company, Lerki pointed out, “TOTM is a non-toxic plasticizer with low volatility, which is used in PVC hose and pipe industries, medical and sanitary industries, cable manufacturing industries, automobile manufacturing and shoe industries and producing synthetic leather.”

The researcher pointed to the production of flame retardant powders as another knowledge-based achievement of their company, adding, “These powders are produced in four grades. Flame retardant powder is an additive used to improve the performance of combustible products in fire.”

“The only universal feature of such materials is that they are additives that are added to combustible materials to reduce their flammability,” he added.

Larki pointed to making car covers and construction equipment fireproof among other uses of flame retardant powders.
