Iran Unearths 10-Mln-Year-Old Fossil Site

TEHRAN (ANA)- A 10-million-year-old fossil site has been discovered in Iran's Northwestern province of East Azarbaijan, containing diverse fossils, a report said.

This site, located in Ahaq village of Maragheh County, is significant for its rich collection of ancient vertebrate fossils, the Iranian media quoted Shahnam Ashtari, head of the provincial Department of Environment, as saying.

He added that it is the first time that exploration and drilling activities have been started in the village, saying the "amazing" fossils found in the area belong to the families of horses, elephants, bovidae, rhinoceroses, and different kinds of carnivores.

Ashtari also noted that this fossil site boasts one of the longest horizontal layers ever discovered, with an estimated age exceeding 10 million years.
