Official: Iran’s Surgeon Robot to Receive License for Surgery on Human Soon
“The most pioneering remote surgical robot in the world is the US-made da Vinci robot. Nearly three years after the da Vinci robot was presented, we designed 'Sina remote surgery robot' based on our own capabilities which has about 10 US patents and all problems of the da Vinci robot have been resolved in our robot,” said Saeed Sarkar, the head of the Advanced Medical Equipment Technologies Department of the Research Institute of Tehran's Medical Sciences University.
Noting that the ‘Sina’ robot enjoys seven advantages over the da Vinci robot, he said, “The US sells the da Vinci robot to other countries, but does not provide remote surgery technology to them since it believes that it is a strategic technology. Our robot is capable of operating remote surgery and we are ready to provide it to other countries.”
Sarkar said that three samples of the robots have been supplied to the Iranian hospitals in Tehran, adding, “We have had remote surgery on 7 to 8 animals so far at Imam Khomeini hospital.”
“We are testing the remote surgeon robot, Sina (on animals), and we will receive the license for robot surgery on human in 6 months,” he stated.
Iranian experts in June 2021 conducted the first remote surgery on a dog by using the fully home-made robot, making Iran the second country in the world after the US with the capability to develop surgical robots.
The robot has a surgical console that the surgeon can control and guide the surgery remotely by standing behind it and using two robotic arms.
Also a monitor has been placed next to the console that shows the image of surgery for surgeon clearly. The surgeon uses this system to control the surgery with a pedal and two robotic arms.
