Young Iranian Researcher Wins IFIA Award for Inventing Postbiotic Beverages
Nagin Hosseinzadeh was a master’s degree student in food science and industry and worked on the project as her thesis at Tabriz University of Medical Sciences in cooperation with her supervisor Dr. Aziz Homayouni Rad. She won the silver medal of the International Federation of Inventors' Associations (IFIA) in 2023 for her invention, a report by the public relations department of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences said.
She was awarded for offering the production formula of postbiotic drinks that comes without the restrictions on using probiotics and also is very healthy and useful for the body.
Postbiotics is a term to describe byproducts which don’t require refrigeration or special processing conditions to maintain their viability and make an attractive addition to the food and beverage formulator’s toolbox, a definition from studies available online said.
Probiotics are live microorganisms that help maintain a healthy balance of bacteria in the gut. They are non-digestible fibres that feed beneficial bacteria in the gut. Meanwhile, Postbiotics are the beneficial substances that result from the interaction between prebiotics and probiotics. Postbiotics are the "beneficial molecules" that probiotic bacteria produce.
Probiotics are non-pathogenic microorganisms whose beneficial effects on health have been proven and if used in proper doses, they prevent or treat various diseases, but they always face challenges such as survival, and the best solution to resolve these challenges is the use of probiotics metabolites and components.
According to the report by the Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, given the favorable effects of postbiotics and the major role of drinks in our daily lives, the purpose of this invention is to create a useful drink that not only meets the body's need for water, but also will have preventive properties and even help in the treatment of diseases. Therefore, it is possible to turn the consumption of these drinks into a desirable habit and improve the over health in the society.
