“Smart diapers enable effective care of babies, old people, and persons suffering from dementia,” Mohammad Akrami, the inventor of smart diapers said.

The diapers are equipped with sensors that are connected to mobile applications that send out alerts as they detect any leak.

Akrami, 24, is studying bioelectronics engineering at the Islamic Azad University, Semnan branch.

The sensor consists of a passive radio frequency identification tag that is placed below a layer of super absorbent polymer, a type of hydrogel that is typically used in diapers to soak up moisture.

Akrami went on to say that his first invention, a smart diaper for babies, was approved by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

The product won the bronze medal and a certificate for innovation at the first edition of the competition special for members of the International Federation of Inventors' Associations.

In the first and second editions of the Switzerland innovation competition, he won the bronze and the gold medal, respectively.

Considering that the population of Iran is moving toward becoming old and the country will face a large elderly population, taking care of the elderly will be a major concern. So, the smart diaper invention has focused especially on the elderly.

According to the Global Innovation Index (GII 2022) report, Iran is the second most innovative country in the Central and South Asian region and the third among low-middle income countries.

With seven ranks of promotion compared to 2021, Iran has been ranked 53rd in the world, second in the Central and South Asian region, and third in low-middle income countries, and for the second consecutive year, the innovation development rate is higher than expected.

Over the few past years, with the support of the Vice Presidency for Science and Technology, the Iranian house of innovation has been set up in several countries to develop the global market for knowledge-based products.
