Size of Iran’s Joint Solyanka Port in Russian Soil Increases by 3 Hectares
According to public relations department of the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL), in line with development and facilitation of trade relations between Iran and Russia and strengthening of transportation network at the international North-South Corridor, the development plan of the Iranian Solyanka port in Astrakhan, Russia, was launched, and three hectares was added to the backshore of the port.
Solyanka port which is built over an area of fifteen hectares and has five berths, is currently the largest port in the Astrakhan region, situated in the delta of the Volga River, 60 miles (100 km) from the Caspian Sea.
The backshore of the port has been gradually expanded by three hectares from the revenues sources of the port in order to increase its capacity.
The IRISL report added that planning to increase another three hectares is underway. The expansion in field of the hardware and management of the port has increased the activity at the port by 35% as compared to the past.
The report concluded that Increasing the capacity of a port requires the expansion of the backshore of port, that is why buying and renting land has been done to expand it. Therefore, it is expected that the total area of the port will increase to 21 hectares by the end of the year which would mean a 40% increase in port’s capacity.
