“I have used face masks in making cement which is stronger in construction of houses and buildings,” Anahita Amouzesh told ANA on the sidelines of the IRANNANO 2022 exhibition in Tehran.

Asked about her grade and school, she said, “I have completed the fourth grade and I’m going to the fifth grade. I study at Navid-e Salehi school.”

The 13th Nanotechnology Festival and Exhibition (IRANNANO 2022) is being held in Tehran on October 1-4 with participation of over 280 knowledge-based companies active in the field of nanotechnology which have presented more than 1,200 products in different areas.

Since the Covid-19 pandemic began, face masks and other personal protective equipment have become essential for health care workers. Disposable masks have been in specially high demand to help prevent the spread of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19.

All of those masks carry both financial and environmental costs. The Covid-19 pandemic is estimated to generate up to 7,200 tons of medical waste every day, much of which is disposable masks. And even as the pandemic slows down in some parts of the world, health care workers are expected to continue wearing masks most of the time.

Therefore, finding a good way to utilize the used masks is of high importance to protect the environment.
