“Ilam province enjoys a very high diversity in the world of insects due to the special state of vegetation and its location in the Zagros forest region, and for this reason, lots of research work has been done in this regard,” Majid Mirab Balou said.

He added that ‘thrips’ are small and narrow insects with a length of 0.5-15 mm, which have a wide distribution in the world, noting that they are among the smallest insects, and this has made it difficult to observe, collect and accurately identify and breed them.

“Over 6,000 species of them have been reported in the world, of which about 250 species have been identified and reported in Iran,” Mirab Balou said.

He stated that 14 new thrips insects have been collected from Ilam province and registered internationally, so far.

Mirab Balou named the insects as Haplothrips ilamensis Mirab-balou & Minaei, Liophloeothrips baharae Mirab-balou, Aeolothrips euphorbiae Mirab-balou, Eryngyothrips veisii Mirab-balou, Neohydatothrips ilamensis Mirab-balou et Tong, Anaphothrips microptera Mirab-balou, Nourollahi et Jamali, Melanthrips hamedanensis Mirab-balou, Haplothrips (Haplothrips) rasouliani Mirab-balou et Chen, Odontothrips iranensis Mirab-balou et Chen, Rubiothrips parisae Mirab-balou et Chen, Rubiothrips tongi Mirab-balou et Chen, Thrips alavii Mirab-balou, Tong et Chen, Mycterothrips hamedaniensis Mirab-balou, Shi et Chen, Mycterothrips weii Mirab-balou, Shi et Chen, Nesothrips lativentris (Karny), Tylothrips osborni (Hinds), Phlaeothrips annulipes Reuter, Thrips coloratus Schmutz, Stenchaetothrips faurei (Bhatti), Ctenothrips kwanzanensis Takahashi, Dendrothrips octosparsus Wang, Mound and Tong, Bathrips melanicornis (Shumsher), Odontothrips biuncus John, Dichromothrips smithi (Zimmermann), Taeniothrips eucharii (Whetzel), Sminthurus muscicolus Betsch, Pezothrips brunicornis Mirab-balou et Tong, Hemisotoma quadrioculatus (Martynova), Isotoma anglicana Lubbock, Metaphorura riozoi C.-M., Palacios-Vargas & Traser, and Thrips carthami Shumsher.
