“Multiphase flow measurement (MPFM) is a necessity in oil industry to measure the volume of oil and gas production in the multiphase fluid coming out of the wells,” Omid Khayat, a graduate of Amirkabir University of Technology (AUT) and the executive director of the project ‘Production of VG MPFM multiphase oil and gas flowmeter’ said.

“This system of equipment measures the flow ratio of three phases of water, oil and gas separately and online without the need to separate the phases,” he added.

“The data measured by the multiphase flowmeter system is used for monitoring and optimizing oil and gas production from wells that have a shared production lines, reservoir management, well testing and financial exchanges between different exploitation and production units,” Khayat explained more.

According to the AUT researcher, producing the MPFM system required a lot of expertise and it is a complicated process that few manufacturers in this field have accomplished so far.

He added that the system is new and replaces the conventional test separator.

He added that to produce the equipment, nuclear absorptiometry and microwave spectroscopy technologies were used to measure the ratio of phases and also the device to measure differential pressure.

According to the researcher the initial idea of designing and manufacturing the multiphase flowmeter for the first time in Iran was based a doctoral dissertation in the AUT Faculty of Energy and Physics in 2013, which resulted in the acquisition of technical know-how to manufacture the product in 2020 after 8 years of research and developing the idea.

“During the period of research and development and commercialization of the VG MPGM device, a three-phase flowloop laboratory was also designed and set up to test and calibrate the system, which allows creating a three-phase flow with a specified flow rate and phase fraction,” Khayat went on to explain more.

“The VG MPFM variant of multi-phase flow meter succeeded in obtaining several certificates such as ATEX certificate, CE certificate, certificate of compliance with electrical safety and electromagnetic compatibility standards and safety and performance standards of the gamma ray absorption meter under the supervision of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) and finally the manufacturing license and utilization license from the AEOI,” the researcher further asserted.

Khayat said that a combination of different engineering sciences was used to design the equipment.

"To test the system several wells from different reservoirs with different water ratio and different fluid properties were selected. After conducting the field test, this device managed to receive performance confirmation from the relevant employer,” he added.
