Laser Methane Leak Detector System Locally Made by Iranian Knowledge-Based Firm

The knowhow to manufacture laser gas leak detector systems was localized for the first time in Iran by a knowledge-based company, a report by the Iranian Vice Presidency for Science and Technology said.

According to the report, the laser leak detection system is used in various industries. The system built by the company is an advanced laser –long-distance leak detector system that can detect methane gas leaks from far away.

The system is the most widely used methane gas detector in petrochemical, chemical and oil industries, which can also be installed on drones and automatic navigation for monitoring of methane gas in the environment as well.

According to the Science and Technology Vice Presidency, the Iran-made product works based on laser absorption spectroscopy and has a transmitter and receiver of optical pulses. The system, with its high speed in finding potential leaks, is highly effective in reducing the time and costs of leak detection as compared to other methods.

The report added that the sensitivity of the knowledge-based product has been increased and upgraded up to 50 ppm/meter and it can detect leaks with high accuracy from a 50 meters away from the leak. The development of this system can be done to identify other gas leaks in oil and gas fields.

The laser leak detector system was locally manufactured with the support of “lasers, photonics, advanced materials and construction technologies development headquarter” which is part of the vice presidency.
