Carrying Out Plan to Preserve Different Types of Medicinal Plants in 5 Iranian Provinces
Protecting various plant types in a country matters a lot as plants are considered to be a national wealth which could create lots of revenues and jobs for that country, a report by the Iranian Vice Presidency for Science and Technology said.
Preserving and collecting different plant germplasms with the aim of preserving the resources with high genetic value is what a botanical garden does. A botanical garden or botanic garden is a garden with a documented collection of living plants for the purpose of scientific research, conservation, display, and education.
A botanic garden can take care of plant types in different provinces and regions in a country. Valuable types symbolize the habitat and ecosystem of each region.
In fact, botanical gardens are large communities of living plants and valuable vital resources for plant conservation, agriculture, forestry, and horticulture.
Iran ranks 31st in the world in terms of being a habitat for diverse plant types. Therefore, preserving this valuable natural asset in Iran is a necessity. For that purpose, the Department of Development of Sciences and Technologies of Medicinal Plants and Traditional Medicine which is part of the Vice Presidency for Science and Technology pursues that goal by developing and reviving botanical gardens in the country.
During the past year, with the aim pf prevention of erosion and genetic destruction and in completion of five collection development plans in Mashhad, Kohgiluyeh and Boyer Ahmad, Gonabad, Alamut and Lorestan, a new plan to build a collection of endangered indigenous medicinal plants was also carried out in Kerman province which proved to be very fruitful.
