Iranian Technologists Find Formulation of Antifreeze for Passenger, Military Aircraft

TEHRAN (ANA)- Iranian researchers used nanotechnology to achieve the antifreeze and deicer formulation for the body of military and passenger airplanes.

“In this project, we achieved the formulation of antifreeze and deicer for the aircraft body in accordance with international standards of the aviation industry,” said Nassim Nayeb Pashayee, a researcher and manager of the project.

She explained that the research project was carried out in two stages, adding, “In the first stage, we conducted research on the antifreeze and deicer solution for the aircraft body and the final formulation of the prototype antifreeze was synthesized.”

Nayeb Pashayee noted that results of comparing the physical and rheological properties of the synthesized antifreeze and deicer solution with the reference sample and the relevant standard (AMS 1428) indicated a very high compatibility.

“In the second step, the effect of nano additives on the form of particles that can optimize the performance and improve the properties of antifreeze and deicer fluid was investigated and alumina, graphene, copper oxide, iron oxide and titanium oxide nanoparticles that are compatible with the aircraft body’s material were selected and preliminary characterization, including SEM, TEM, XRD and BET analyzes, were performed on these nanoparticles,” she said.

In a relevant development earlier this year, researchers at an Iranian knowledge-based company stationed at the Science and Technology Park of West Azerbaijan province localized production of a kind of raw material used in the aviation industry.

“Zirconium oxide chloride salt is the raw material for the synthesis of zirconium and its derivatives from our knowledge-based products, the production of which lasted for about six years,” Bahman Khorrami, the head of research team in an Iranian knowledge-based company located in the science and technology park of West Azerbaijan province in Northwestern Iran said.

Stating that the salt has been already produced in several countries, he added, “This substance is used as a raw material in nuclear, automotive, turbine, and aviation industries.”

"We, in the company, have been capable of localizing production of zirconium oxide chloride salt," he underscored.
