Mineral Capsules to Treat Calcium Deficiency, Retained Placenta in Cows

TEHRAN (ANA)- The researchers at an Iranian knowledge-based firm using mineral compounds have developed a capsule to treat calcium deficiency and retained placenta in milking cows at a much lower price compared to imported foreign products.

Seyed Hadi Hosseini, a member of the team of researchers of a knowledge-based company told Iranian media that the 200 gram calcium capsules that they have produced in their firm will increase the performance of milking cows.

“The weight of a milking cow is about 600 to 700 kg, and after cows give birth to its child, the colostrum that they produce contains large amounts of calcium; if we calculate the total amount of calcium in cow's milk for her calve, it will be more than the amount of free calcium that exists in the cow's body," he added.

“This would mean that as soon as a cow's milk is milked, its calcium reserves are empty, and the effects of this decrease in calcium in cows show themselves in "clinical" or "sub-clinical" conditions. In clinical complications, the cow falls to the ground and suffers from milk fever. For this and usually intravenous injection methods (IV infusion) are used for treatment, which do not have significant effects. In subclinical complications of calcium deficiency, affected cows do not have clinical symptoms,” he added.

Hosseini considered the retention of fetal membranes in cows after parturition as one of the symptoms of calcium deficiency in the subclinical condition, adding, "Expulsion of the fetal membranes must happen within 24 hours after parturition, but this does not happen due to the lack of calcium, because calcium deficiency prevents uterine contractions that result in expelling fetal membranes.”

“The compounds in this capsule improve uterine contractions in cows, while improving the intestinal contractions, which improves the movement of food materials along the digestive tract, which in turn leads to an increase in animal’s feed consumption,” the researcher continued.

According to him, when the animal eats more food, it will receive more calcium, which in turn, treats the calcium deficiency in the animal.

“Cows that use this capsule will have better fertility two months after giving birth to their children. By using the calcium capsules produced in this company, the incidence of metabolic diseases such as retained placental is reduced, which is valuable for herders,” Hosseini continued.

He went on to say that their company has begun producing the medicine at industrial level, adding,” Every cow should take this capsule orally after giving birth, and for this purpose, we made an applicator through which this medicine is injected into the animal's digestive system.”

Hosseini considered the ingredients of this medicine to be mineral substances such as calcium sulfate, calcium chloride and calcium propionate, saying, "This medicine is offered at a price of one-fourth to one-fifth of foreign samples."
