Malaysia's Inflation Increases at Slower Rate of 3.7 Percent in January

TEHRAN (ANA)- Malaysia's inflation, as measured by the Consumer Price Index, eased to 3.7 percent in January from 3.8 percent in December 2022, official data showed.

The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) said in a statement that the slower increase has been recorded since October 2022.

According to the DOSM, the increase in Malaysia's inflation in January was driven by restaurants and hotels (6.8 percent), food and non-alcoholic beverages (6.7 percent) and transport (4 percent).

This was followed by furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance group (3.5 percent), recreation services and culture (2.7 percent), miscellaneous goods and services (2.3 percent) and health (1.6 percent).

Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels, as well as education recorded an increase by 1.5 percent and 1.3 percent, respectively.

Alcoholic beverages and tobacco, as well as clothing and footwear also rose 0.8 percent and 0.5 percent respectively as against January 2022.

Core inflation, which measures changes in the prices of all goods and services without considering the volatile prices of fresh food, as well as administered prices of goods by the government, also registered a slower increase of 3.9 percent in January as compared to the same month of the previous year.
