A team of researchers at a knowledge-based Iranian company are producing antibacterial stationery, and have opened a laboratory to make it possible to identify and determine the type of stationery for cold and warm climates, as well as areas that are exposed to dust particles.

The team have been able to export their products as well.

Mehran Mersad, manager of research and development of the Iranian knowledge-based stationery production company said that antibacterial nano stationery is one of the knowledge-based achievements of his company.

“The research and production plan of this type of stationery was carried out from 2011 to 2014 and finally we achieved the know-how of producing antibacterial stationery using nanoparticles. These products include erasers, pens and sandspiel,” he said.

“If harmful bacteria are on the hand, they will be destroyed after a few seconds if they get contacted with this antibacterial stationery. One of the harmful things is the presence of helicobacter on the hand, which will lead to gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer. In case of contact with this antibacterial stationery, the helicobacter will be destroyed,” Mersad explained.

“In order to produce antibacterial stationery, masterbatches were added to the raw materials, and in this way, the entire components of the products become antibacterial,” the researcher further explained.

Mersad explained more that they started research on the production of antibacterial inks for pens, so that they can reduce writing defects.

He also said they have established an advanced stationery laboratory as one of the other achievements of their company, adding, “This laboratory is considered the most advanced laboratory in the region. We are now partner laboratory of the Standard Organization, and we are the only stationery laboratory that received a research and development license from the Ministry of Industry."

According to him, the environmental conditions are also checked to select the appropriate tip and ink for the pens.

“If we want to use the pen in the Southern part of the country where the temperature gets high up to 50 to 60 degrees Celsius, we cannot use it in the Northern part of the country, where the temperature is much lower and we cannot get the desired result, because the viscosity of the ink decreases,” the researcher explained.

“If the tip and ink are not used for the temperature conditions, there is a possibility of unwanted ink leakage, and these parameters are investigated in this laboratory,” he added.

“In this laboratory, we check the type of inks suitable for different climates. If the user is in cold areas, the amount of ink coming out of the pen tip should be adjusted, which requires costly and time-consuming tests to understand which ink with which viscosity and physical conditions should be selected for which type of pen tip,” Mersad noted.

He added that many foreign companies have send to his company nibs and inks, requesting that the company choose the best type of inks and nibs for the climate of their country.

As regards the effects of dust particles on stationery, the researcher said, “In addition to that, papers also affect the quality of the pen.”

Referring to the export activities of their company, he said, "Currently, we have opened an office in one of the countries, and we have also set up several joint factories with other countries in the field of antibacterial stationery production.”
