"Mycotoxins are toxins produced by fungi. Molds are an instance of these fungi which have different types and naturally exist in the environment. The Fungi can, specially, grow on livestock feed, and when they grow on livestock feed, they contaminate it and destroy its nutritional value," Ehsan Karimi, a faculty member of the biology department of Islamic Azad University's Mashhad branch, told ANA on the sidelines of Asreh Omid Event.

Mycotoxins are naturally occurring toxins produced by certain moulds (fungi) and can be found in food. The moulds grow on a variety of different crops and foodstuffs including cereals, nuts, spices, dried fruits, apples and coffee beans, often under warm and humid conditions.

Mycotoxins can cause a variety of adverse health effects and pose a serious health threat to both humans and livestock.

He explained that when the livestock uses the contaminated feed, certain toxins enter its body which leave negative impact on its flesh and milk, adding that the toxins also enter human body when eating the livestock productions which can cause highly dangerous diseases, specially cancer, in long term.

"We made a product called toxin binder. Toxin means poison and binder means the substance that negates the impact of these poisons. The product is completely herbal and is made of plant wastes with a very high fungicidal capability, including date kernels, which are mixed with certain ratios of several different plant wastes and water, and added to animal feed, and it fully negates the impacts of toxins," Karimi said.

"We carried out two experiments at the laboratory level on mice and chickens, and we achieved highly promising results, which prove that the product completely eliminates the impact of micro mycotoxins and is also quite in economy field," he concluded.

Islamic Azad University's "second step of revolution" under the title of Asreh Omid Event was held in Tehran's Mosalla from May 29 to June 01, 2022 to exhibit new achievements, equipment and products in the technological and innovation arenas in line with opening new windows towards strengthening the idea of creating ground for knowledge-based businesses at the 40th anniversary of establishment of the Islamic Azad University.
