Healthy lifestyle remains the best defense against heart aging
Dr. Yuri Konev, a cardiologist, stated that age-related decline in the heart muscle can be slowed and cardiac function preserved primarily through sustained lifestyle modifications and healthy daily habits.
He explained that currently available pharmacological treatments have not shown a meaningful capacity to regenerate cardiac muscle cells or reverse structural damage associated with aging.
According to Dr. Konev, previous medical research has established that cardiomyocytes—the specialized cells that make up the heart muscle—undergo substantial structural changes with advancing age. Russian researchers have identified four principal biomarkers of cardiac cellular aging, all of which adversely affect the heart’s contractile performance and its overall functional endurance.
He noted that existing medical interventions for age-related cardiac degeneration remain limited in effectiveness at the current stage of scientific development. Consequently, any effort to slow irreversible biological processes should rely on a long-term preventive strategy rather than expectations of pharmacological reversal. These conclusions are supported by long-term clinical observations of individuals committed to maintaining their overall health.
“Maintaining a healthy lifestyle remains the most effective preventive approach available today,” Dr. Konev said. “Other medical interventions are either ineffective or their benefits are still too limited to produce a meaningful clinical impact.”
The cardiologist stressed that a balanced diet and regular physical activity continue to be the two most important factors in preserving normal organ function. Conversely, the absence of a systematic approach to personal health accelerates biological aging, while prolonged physical inactivity may contribute to detrimental changes in the heart muscle, ultimately reducing quality of life in later years.
Dr. Konev also highlighted the need for long-term fundamental scientific studies extending beyond a decade to more accurately evaluate age-related physiological changes.
He added that lifestyle habits established early in life play a critical role in determining future cardiovascular health. As a result, consistent daily physical activity—even in simple forms—can serve as an effective alternative to more complex medical interventions when practiced regularly.
He further emphasized that dietary modification becomes increasingly important after the age of 50, when the body becomes more sensitive to everyday physiological stress.
This shift necessitates a reassessment of eating habits. Regular exercise, he noted, has profound effects on overall physiological function by improving vascular health and regulating metabolic processes. Likewise, modest dietary adjustments and the avoidance of harmful nutritional habits may substantially reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases.
