Iran targets CENTCOM’s ‘Digital Eye’ in Bahrain in retaliatory strike
The Iranian Armed Forces said on Wednesday that they had struck Amazon’s central data infrastructure in Bahrain during the 24th wave of Operation Nasr-2, describing the facility as a key information-exchange node for the US military in the region.
According to the statement, the target was Amazon Web Services’ Bahrain cloud region, known as “me-south-1.” Launched in 2019, the facility was Amazon’s first dedicated data-processing center in the Middle East.
The Iranian statement described the Bahrain-based AWS facility as the “digital eye” of the US Central Command and a key hub for intelligence processing used by Washington and its allies in the Persian Gulf.
It also said Amazon is one of four major contractors involved in the US Department of Defense’s Joint Warfighting Cloud Capability (JWCC) program, a $9 billion contract that enables the Pentagon to deploy cloud computing, data analytics and artificial intelligence capabilities across operational theaters and regional military bases.
Iran said the strike was carried out in response to what it described as US acts of aggression against Iranian territory.
The Iranian Armed Forces further claimed that the US military had conducted waves of aerial attacks on Iran for 10 consecutive nights, targeting civilian sites, and described the attacks as war crimes.
In response, Iranian forces said they had launched retaliatory strikes against strategic US targets across West Asia.
