Iran Summons Italian Envoy Over FM’s Call to Blacklist IRGC

TEHRAN (ANA)- Iran on Tuesday summoned Italy’s ambassador to Tehran in response to what it described as “irresponsible” remarks by Italy’s foreign minister urging the European Union to designate the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization.

According to Iran’s Foreign Ministry, Paola Amadei, Italy’s ambassador to Tehran, was called in for a meeting with Alireza Yousefi, Assistant Foreign Minister and Director General for Western Europe Affairs.

The move followed comments by Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, who a day earlier pressed the EU to add the IRGC to its terrorism blacklist amid unrest and security incidents in Iran.

During the meeting, Yousefi conveyed Tehran’s strong objection to Italy’s stance, emphasizing that the IRGC is a legally constituted component of Iran’s armed forces.

He cautioned that any attempt to label the force would carry serious repercussions for bilateral relations and urged Rome to reconsider what he termed a misguided policy toward Iran. Ambassador Amadei said she would relay Iran’s position to her government without delay.
