Iranian Company Produces Alcohol-Free Perfumes by Using Nanotechnology
“First, we extract the active plant ingredient and then convert it to the nanoscale by using nanotechnology. Depending on the type of product, other nanomaterials may be added to it or it may not have any additives,” said Shaqayeq Rahimi, the managing director of the company.
“This technology has allowed us to eliminate alcohol, so the products can be used directly on the skin and used for aromatherapy or air freshening,” she added.
“The advantage of these products compared to similar ones is the increased shelf life and slow-release effectiveness of the ingredients; in this way, the properties of the plants are better preserved and the scent lasts longer. In addition to personal use, this technology can also be used in environmental and aromatherapy fields,” Rahimi said.
The 16th International Nano Technology Exhibition and the First Exhibition of Advanced Technologies of Iran was inaugurated at the Tehran International Fairground.
Held from November 2 to 5, the Nano Exhibition featured over 150 innovative companies showcasing advancements in nanotechnology. Meanwhile, the Exhibition of Advanced Technologies hosted 80 knowledge-based and technological products, attracting visitors, particularly students, researchers, and investors.
In a relevant development in November, Iranian researchers had succeeded in obtaining a formulation for production of a key type of flavoring and preservative for application in pharmaceutical and food industries.
The main ingredient of rose water is 2-phenylethanol, which is used in various industries, including perfumery, pharmaceutical and food industries, and is considered as one of the knowledge-based achievements of this company. This product was produced through a new laboratory method and has received a science-based award for it.
2-Phenylethanol is one of the main components of many perfumes due to its sweet and floral smell. This substance gives depth and richness to perfumes and increases the durability of their smell, and it is also used as a preservative and antibacterial agent in the pharmaceutical industry. This substance helps to increase the shelf life of medicines and prevents the growth of bacteria.
2-Phenylethanol is used in the food industry as a flavoring agent for some food products and gives them a pleasant aroma and taste.
Phenethyl alcohol, or 2-phenylethanol, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C6H5CH2CH2OH. It is a colourless liquid with a pleasant floral odor. It occurs widely in nature, being found in a variety of essential oils. It is slightly soluble in water (2 ml per 100 ml of H2O), but miscible with most organic solvents. The molecule of phenethyl alcohol consists of a phenethyl group (C6H5CH2CH2−) attached to a hydroxyl group (−OH).
