Currently, 623 thermal power generation units in 141 power plants are meeting 94% of the country's need for electricity. Previously, the know-how and technology of manufacturing power plant components used to be only in the hands of the United States, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, and Japan, but now Iran has joined the group of five countries in possession of the know-how and technology to manufacture power plant components.

Iran is also a major exporter of technical and engineering services in the field of power plant repairs besides manufacturing parts to restore and rebuild power plants. Now, Iran is a leading country in the Middle East with respect to the capabilities to repair and reconstruction auxiliary equipment of thermal power plants. As Masoud Moradi - the CEO of Iran Power Plant Repairs Company (IPRC) has said, the know-how and capabilities of Iranian experts to restore thermal power plants hot parts has saved the country $200 million annually.

“We no longer rely on foreign countries for the repair and launch of thermal power plants. Currently, in addition to meeting the needs of our country, domestic experts are providing technical and engineering services in this sector and repairing power plant units in other countries in the region,” the CEO of the IPRC said.

Now, 91% of power plant components are locally produced, Moradi said, adding that only in the last five years, about 825,000 power plant parts have been made by local experts and used in power plants. There is the ability to repair 95% of parts in power plants, the remaining 5% are sometimes considered as the main parts of the product and there is no need to build them because those components do not break down, unless something unusual happens in the power plant.

Even the power plants that were built in the past by other countries in Iran can be overhauled and repaired through local know-how and expertise. In the past, all the power plants that were built in the country were with Siemens technology, and now there is the ability to repair all those parts inside the country. Moreover, no foreign-made turbines are installed in power plants anymore.

Overall, Iran has not only reached self-sufficiency in thermal power plant repairs, but also the Iranian experts are able to meet the needs of some other countries. According to Iranian officials, the country earns almost $20 million annually from the exports of technical and engineering services and about $7 to $10 million from the sale of those auxiliary parts to other countries.
